Prayers for Competitive Cubicles: No More Toppling

Prayers for Competitive Cubicles are petitions for those trying to be salt, leaven, and light at work when clearly ambition and antagonism are being encouraged and rewarded.

SECOND ADAM, THE SUN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,

We confess unreservedly: We acted deaf and confused. We coveted with invasive eyes. We desolated innocence. We fell on our faces, and we covered ourselves like cowards.

We can’t blame him, because we were in him. It was our avarice that betrayed the tree. Our proclivities led us to run. The coolness of the day became our enemy, too.

We laud you: You who did what we couldn’t. You became what we never could. And only you can help us do what we need to do–what you have gifted us to do.

Dispel the darkness in our hearts. Burn the hegemony of our ambition. Expose our vainglory. Blind the ubiquitous tyranny of our desire to stand out and topple over others.

And slice the worms eating your good fruit. Cut the cords of upside down normalcy. Lift the scales from our eyes so that we can envision the vocational heritage we might leave.

Grant us the courage to willingly sit in broken chairs. Give us the patience to allow antagonistic emails to bounce off of our pride. Enable us to bless the embittered.

As we rise every Monday, resurrect our resolution. Each day, and every day, may we see the dignity and significance of our gifts and talents, and appreciate the honor and gravity of the office.

May we be reminded that as we disciple the nations, you go to prepare a place where only you will stand out and shine, and no one will be toppled again.

Amen.
